EAS Congress 2015: Global Targets, Local Benefits
EAS Congress 2015: Global Targets, Local Benefits

Session 3.1: Responding to the SDGs in the Seas of East Asia: Are we ready?

OBJECTIVE(S):

  • To introduce the recently adopted SDGs and in particular the implication of the SDGs on management of 'coasts and oceans' in the EAS region.
  • To explore the coverage and harmonization between the SDGs and ocean-related strategies and programs of international development agencies, national governments and regional organizations in the Seas of East Asia.
  • To detail the updated PEMSEA strategy and post-2015 targets for SDS-SEA implementation as a regional roadmap and framework for meeting the SDGs.
  • To identify essential partnerships and collaborative opportunities among international and regional organizations, countries, academe and private sector for effectively planning, developing, implementing and reporting on progress with respect to SDG implementation and impacts at different levels in the EAS region.

EXPECTED OUTPUTS:

  • Increased awareness of SDG targets and the challenges in the EAS region.
  • Recognition of the updated SDS-SEA and the PEMSEA regional framework as a mechanism for improved coordination and response to the SDGs.
  • Regional partnership opportunities for planning, implementing and assessing contributions from the different sectors to SDGs and preparation of a consolidated monitoring and reporting system.

KEY MESSAGE(S) OF THE WORKSHOP/SEMINAR/EVENT

  • Countries of the East Asia region share one ocean, which accounts for 80% of global aquaculture, more than 65% of harvesting and processing of the world’s capture fisheries, serves as an important conduit for 90% of world trade, and connects people, markets and livelihoods.
  • The updated SDS-SEA and post-2015 targets have been formulated in response to the recently adopted SDGs, and in particular the targets that are linked to the governance and management of coasts and oceans.
  • There is no single country, organization, industry or organization that can achieve the SDG targets alone. Partnerships and collaborative implementation of concrete actions, including investments by the public and private sectors are essential.
  • The PEMSEA and its updated SDS-SEA provide the framework and platform for developing, implementing, evaluating and reporting on progress, achievements and impacts on SDG targets among national and local governments, regional organizations, international development agencies, corporate sector/business community, and academe/scientific institutions in the region.
